Hi, I'm Hazel and I am an upholsterer, having completed my diploma with the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishers in 2020. I have also worked as a costume maker in the film and television industry for 15 years, so I've spent a lot of time with fabric. You can view some of my work on Instagram.
Combining upholstery skills, years of sewing experience and a love of textiles, I take old and tired pieces of furniture and turn them into vibrant and stylish items for you to enjoy in your home for years to come. I like to think of it as making costumes for chairs.
I specialise in modern and traditional upholstery and I can guide you through the process of creating new from old, assisting with fabric choices and wood finishes. Reupholstery is a sustainable choice as it keeps furniture out of landfill. With some imagination, gorgeous new fabric and a bit of TLC, your furniture will be transformed.
I also make a range of soft furnishings, including bespoke scatter cushions and made to measure window and bench seat cushions.

Traditional Upholstery
Breathe new life into well-made furniture with time-honoured techniques and natural materials like coir fibre, hessian and double cone springs. Traditional upholstery focuses on restoring the structure and comfort of your furniture, preserving its character while making it beautiful and usable for years to come.
Leather restoration and repair
leather is hard wearing, but it benefits from occasional TLC. I repair cracks and holes, restitch loose seams and revive faded, tired upholstery with careful cleaning, colour matching and conditioning.
Modern Upholstery
Freshen up a favourite furniture or give it a full revamp. Modern upholstery suits furniture from the 1950s onward, using durable foams or eco alternatives like rubberised coir or Ultrraflex to create crisp lines, lasting comfort and everyday durability.
It's also ideal for new bespoke makes like ottomans, footstools and headboards, tailored to your designs.
Bespoke cushions
Whether it's for a window seat, a kitchen banquette or a campervan, I can create comfortable and durable cushions to your design and specifications.
Chair caning and seat weaving
Restore strength and style on your cane chair. I repair and re-weave seats using classic and contemporary methods to suit your chair. I also offer rush, seagrass and danish/papercord weaving.
Miscellaneous makes and fixes
I really enjoy problem solving and have done many projects that don't quite fit the Upholstery brief. I've repaired musical instrument cases, eyeleted yoga mats, lined antique boxes, created bespoke mats and visors for vans and worked on various art installations. Have you got a small item of furniture you've been wanting to give a new lease of life? Join the one day workshop where you can bring your own project and learn how to strip it down and rebuild it. With just three people per class, you'll get calm, friendly support as you try a range of techniques and use both hand tools and machinery to transform your furniture. You will also get to take inspiration from everyone else's projects - it's a fun way to learn and spark ideas for other projects. It costs £130 per day and the class will run from 10am-4.30pm.
What you'll learn
- How to assess your piece: what's worth keeping, what needs replacing.
- Safe stripping techniques to remove old fabric, tacks and staples without damaging the frame.
- Webbing, padding and stuffing basics.
- Cutting, measuring and pattern-matching your new fabric.
- Tool confidence- using staple guns, tack lifters, hammers and scissors safely.
- Stapling, tacking and tensioning for a neat finish.
- Adding trim or braid and finishing the underside.
- How to plan your next project and choose upholstery fabrics that last.
No experience needed and all tools are provided. Bring your furniture and upholstery-grade fabric. Foams and other fillings are available to buy from the studio.
Need fabric? There is a small range of fabrics available to buy here or order from the studio sample books in the weeks before your workshop - just mention it when you book.
Hot and cold drinks and snacks will be provided and we'll pause for a 30-minute lunch. There's a fridge, microwave and kettle available, plus a café on site.
The studio is located in RogArt Street Campus, Glasgow, just a 4 minute walk from Bridgeton train station. There is free on-street parking outside the building.

No question was too small or silly. The day was so relaxed and it was nice to see all the different things people brought.
